Why I Sold Everything I Owned To Travel South America

Download my FREE e-book 'Why I Sold Everything I Owned To Travel South America'
P.S. I don't share your email with ANYONE else, EVER!!

At a club, spotted a golden tanned, blonde haired dude with tassled hair. Asked him straight up if he were a surfer dude who lived on the beach all day – turned out he did.

I must be psychic :)

Told me he was a professional windsurfer, and then he gave that up to become a professional surfer. He gave up all of his possessions to travel the world and do competitions.

Currently he was a little older and could no longer compete, so he became a diving instructor, but he still surfed EVERY DAY.

Here at least was a guy living on his own terms.

I did something last year; sold my car, sold my house, gave away all of my furniture and possessions (kept a few things and books in a small storage space) and I spent nearly ONE YEAR traveling all over South America.

I wanted to drop all of the accumulation of material goods.

And it felt great.

I’m back, but currently my car is a piece of junk and I’m renting a place prefurnished with very modest furniture.

It’s a relief not to be burdened down by possessions actually.

My identity is no longer tied to what outside material objects I have. I have a few pairs of nice clothes, and that’s it.

Are you daring enough to throw all of your crap away and live free, if only for 6 months as a new “skin” to try it out, like my new friend surfer dude? :)

  3. Ricardo says:

  4. Sandy says:

Hey Jesse, good to have you back. SS forum is what reminds me about your stuff! Welcome home? Can I say so? :)

  5. Karea, I visited Japan about 10 years ago. It was a lot of fun… I need to get on the lounge and catch up with you some.

sounds like great idea, but as john said : who is going to pay all the bills, I really wish I could take a break and get away from it all , and get new perspective

I tried doing that. I got really hungry. I was dirty all the time. Living that life made me angry, upset, and frustrated. The first month was good, but you need money to eat and live. Being hungry did NOT help my game. I like my sports car, condo, job, money, and life.

  8. Shrinivas says:

i’ll comment again at leasure – in office right now, working away and trying to solve some of my ‘burden’ related problems!

  9. Brian, haha, I WAS living on about $2,000 per month to spend.  I just got rid of my possessions.  I used taxis and buses.  But yeah, being hungry and not having ANY money would definately SUCK.  You need enough money to have something in your belly and be in a safe place.  That’s a different story.

  10. Karea says:

Jesse, I just read your new blog post and your trip sounds A LOT like the one I did in 2002… I took a year to see South America the only country I skipped was Uruguay. Shameless, my wing from Madrid, is doing the exact same thing at the moment - he’s now in Salvador now and going back to Spain in a month or so.

Brian, in South America, you can definitely get by on 1000 bucks a month and still eat out 3 times a day and stuff. I even met guys who travelled all over the whole continent on 8 bucks a day (the dollar was a bit stronger then but).

Yeah, see you on the Lounge…

    -Karea.

I think what you did was great as long as you felt like your happy with yourself now. Life in the US is so crazy and it’s hard to slow down. Do you have any videos or when are you going to put some videos of you in the field. I would love to see how the material works from the master and not like the Mystery guy .

    Hello Jesse, Welcome back!

I’ve found your adventure very isnpiring in term of reconnecting with oneself.  I’m saying this because lately, I’ve been thinking about throwing or giving away the majority of my possessions especially books, magazines, toys(yeah toys, i’ve got lots of these in my crib) eccetera eccetra.

I can feel a new me is about to come out.  So I think your gesture very liberating as Tyler Durden had put it in “Fight Club” The things you own end up ownig you ” This is so fucking true. Afeter watching this movie one more time recently, I came to realise how robotic life has become.

But I’m not going to see the world as you didi, instead, I’m planning on going on the exploration of United Kingdom Countryside.

Anyway thanks for sharing that uplifting story of yours and All the Best!!

    Roland

    Hi Jesse and Brian,
Jesse- Your trip is very inspiring. I must do that when I am single, again. :) People in developing nations are so much without the frills that we have in modern society. Indeed, there is so much more shagging going on in Lo-tech societies.
Brian- mate, what you’re supposed to do is buy a house/flat and not rent, in your home country in your business’ name. You register a business in that the main job is to hook up international buyers with international sellers. Then you lease your flat. Go overseas and all the money that you get as rent, you have a blast with that money. Keep all receipts for tax deductions/ tax returns. You will be delighted when the taxman is told that all your overseas expenses are business related expenses and as such all tax accrued from your inward rental income becomes tax free as it is set off against your off shore expenses.
I’m an aussie and I’ve been doing that  for 8 years.
    Good Luck!
